MSF is an independent international medical relief organisation, with 28 offices worldwide. When large-scale epidemics occur, when areas in crisis are too dangerous for many other organisations, then our medical teams are there to assist the affected population. We organise basic medical care, treat the injured, carry out vaccination campaigns, train local staff and build up medical infrastructure. In long-term aid projects our teams fight diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, sleeping sickness, and HIV/AIDS.
For our international field work we are looking for
Nurses
tasks and responsibilities
Nurses play a central role in our deployments.
As a nurse, your work with us will probably be very different from what you are used to. Our projects are often in places where there is a lack of many things, and generally in locations where there are hardly any clinics or doctors. In many projects, relatives and caregivers on site take over the basic care of the patients, so you are mainly responsible for the organization of work, training and further education as well as the management of teams. In some projects, you will also manage a health center or a hospital.
Your other tasks may include organizing and implementing vaccination programs and hygiene measures as well as mother-child information and advice. Where appropriate, you may also manage medicine stocks, coordinate inpatient programs for malnourished children (similar to working in an intensive care unit) and develop health education concepts. Data collection, staff management and contacts with authorities may also be part of your work. You may also be assigned to the surgical emergency room and outpatient clinic.
Our Requirements
-
A completed training as a nurse or as a pediatric nurse
- At least five years of professional experience preferably in the following areas: internal medicine, emergency room, pediatrics, neonatology, intensive care, geriatrics, surgery

- A course in tropical medicine is compulsory (you can also start this after the interview)
- Time availability for at least nine to twelve months, preferably longer
- Very good knowledge of English and ideally further language skills in French, Spanish, Arabic or Russian. Good knowledge of French can have a significant influence on the overall assessment and final selection decision
- Travel or work experience in African, Asian or Latin American countries
- Willingness to work in accordance with the humanitarian principles as well as the charter and mission statement of Médecins Sans Frontières
- Ability to work in a team, cultural sensitivity, organisational and improvisational skills as well as high mental and physical resilience
